Biography:
She’s well known for her bootylicious and really sexy backside. She’s
an all-hit singer, a great actress and an extraordinary performer.
She’s also known by the nickname of La Guitarra (or guitar-shaped
body). Well, one look at her luscious body and you know that no one
deserves that nickname more than Jennifer Lopez! She’s the woman
behind many hit movies like Selena, The Chambermaid, Enough, The
Wedding Planner, Anaconda, and lots more. But more than the movies,
Jennifer is also known for her wonderful music! In fact, she first
became famous for her songs before she entered the limelight of
acting.
La Guitarra, or J Lo, for her fans, was born on July 24, 1970 in
Bronx, New York. She came from a family of five wherein she has two
other sisters. She’s the second child of David Lopez, a computer
specialist, and Guadalupe Lopez, a kindergarten teacher. Both of her
sisters are into acting and singing, as well. Her elder sister,
Leslie, sings the opera while her younger sister, Lynda, is a DJ on
New York’s WKTU and is associated with New York’s Channel 11.
Even as a child, Jennifer has loved music but most especially, she
loves dancing. She took singing and dancing lessons at the early age
of 5, and she knew then that she wants to be a dancer when she grows
up. She spent her elementary and high school days in a Catholic school
and then to an all-girl high school. She was, and still is, a very
active person. She was a player of their softball, tennis, and gymnast
team.
After graduating from Preston High School in 1987, she enrolled in
Baruch College in New York City, but she later dropped out after a
semester when she decided to pursue a dancing career. However, her
mother was opposed to this idea and Jennifer, at the age of 16, was
forced to leave their house to follow her dreams. When she read about
a scholarship in a dance school in Manhattan, she immediately went
there and enrolled. She was later given a role as one of “The Fly
Girls” on a production of ‘In Living Color.’
While Jennifer was on the set of ‘In Living Color,’ a coworker
recommended her for a part in ‘South Central,’ a short TV series.
Although the series was only a short one, as well as her part, it gave
Jennifer some exposure and experience in the acting industry. It also
gave her another part in two other short TV series.
After the TV series, Jennifer got a chance to do a movie with Wesley
Snipes and Woody Harrelson in the movie “The Money Train.” But it was
her role in the movie “Selena” that got her in the eyes of the public.
In this movie, she played the lead role as Selena. With her dancing
skills and sweet voice, she portrayed the role effectively. This was
also the movie where she got voted as one of 50 Most Beautiful People
in People Magazine.
After “Selena,” Jennifer immediately got another movie offer for
“Blood and Wine” and “U-Turn.” These are the movies that secured her
star status. She also proved in these movies that she can already hold
her own against big and powerful actors and actresses. But it didn’t
go smoothly after that. She experienced few more ups and downs with
every movie she made, but even though her road was tough, she always
makes it through and seems to emerge from every trial unscathed and
reborn.
After her movie “Out of Sight” with George Clooney, it was when things
got a litlle easy for her. She made a big entrance at the Oscars’
ceremony and secured a modeling contract with L’Oreal. Her first music
video was also released by Sony where she appeared in Puff Daddy’s
‘Been Around the World.’
In 1999, her first album, “On The 6,” was released. This album was a
perfect hybrid of hip-hop, Latin, and Pop music. The single “If You
Had My Love” went to Number One in the charts in no time at all and
song “No Me Ames” was a Latin chart-topper, as well. Almost all her
songs after her first album were a hit. And to date, she was the
highest paid Latin American actress/singer.
