Biography

Gwendolyn Renee Stefani, or Gwen Stefani, is the lead singer of the Grammy Award winning band, No Doubt. But besides from being the lead singer, Gwen also writes music and she has written most of the band’s songs. Their famous song, Don’t Speak, was written by Gwen in memory of her broken relationship with former band mate Tony Kanal.

Gwen was not the original lead singer of No Doubt but only a back up vocal. However, when John Spence, the original lead singer, committed suicide, her brother Eric persuaded her to take the role of lead singer.

Gwen was born on the third day of October 1969 in Anaheim, California, USA. She is one of the four children of Dennis and Patti Stefani. She has two brothers (Eric and Todd) and a younger sister (Jill).

Gwen grew up listening to ska and punk music and she admitted that it has a great influence in her life. She also love listening and watching musical plays. Two of her favorite musical dramas are The Sound of Music and Annie.
Gwen was such an ordinary girl when she was young. She used to have daydreams about her future husband and about her life with her babies and husband. However, when she turned 17, she realized that she has a talent for writing songs. It was when her life took a drastic turn. From the carefree, no-nonsense, and not-a-care in the world attitude, Gwen became more realistic and determined. She also started to have dreams of her own: dream that one day she will be a famous song writer or even a singer.
When her brother founded the band No Doubt, Gwen’s dreams started to materialize. She joined the band and in no time at all had their songs signed up for recording. The band released their first album entitled No Doubt in 1992. They collected a number of fans, although their first album was not entirely successful. In early 1995, they released their second album, The Beacon Street Collection and later that same year, their third album was released. Their third album was their most popular album which was entitled Tragic Kingdom and it topped the charts all over Canada and US.
As time passes by, Gwen’s, as well as the rest of the band’s ideas and characters changed. Their fourth album, Return of Saturn (April 2000), showed a more mature No Doubt and Gwen also matured together with the band.
Gwen became an accomplished lead singer and song writer for the band No Doubt. However, like every one else, Gwen has a dream of her own. Although she admitted that she had no plans of leaving the band, when the offer came for a single album, she knew she had to have a go and try it.

With the help of Dr Dre, The Neptunes, Andre 3000, Linda perry, Bernard Summer, Peter Hook, Nellee Hooper, Dallas Austin, Wendy, Lisa, Tony Kanal, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, Gwen was able to pull through her first single album, which was entitled “Love. Angel. Music. Baby.”
Gwen’s attitude towards her work is very professional and full of passion. She said that making an album, or anything else for that matter, is and, should, always be a collaboration of different people, different talents, and different views and opinions. She also said that to be able to work in harmonious surrounding, one should know how to swallow her ego and be open-minded about everything and for everything.
Her single album is the proof of her natural talent and passion for music. It is a work of art, not only because of the beautiful songs made together by different talented persons, but more so because it is a labor of love from all the people who contributed for the album.
Gwen Stefani has won numerous awards for her songs and she has reigned as one of rock music’s most iconic and cool people. And this girl is just starting to explore her new-found talent and passion, so her fans could expect more songs from her, as well as from her band.
