Biography
Geri Halliwell aka Ginger Spice was born on August 8, 1972 in Watford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom when her father was already 50 years old. A perfect blend of Spanish and Swedish-English blood, Geri appeared on camera at a very young age. Ginger Spice (Geri’s coveted title) along with the other Spice Girl members was on the height of their career when she decided to leave the group and start her solo singing career -- one of the toughest decisions she made on her entire life.
She was the oldest member of the group and probably the most experienced among them when the group hit the road on the year 1993. She leads the group not just in age but also in attitude. Geri can be characterized as a very naughty, bossy, fun loving, totally independent and strong willed woman. If not on her work, she loves spending quality time with her family. She said she’s much closer to her father than to her mom because she somehow got most his traits that on her mom.
Geri Halliwell’s influences in music include the ABBA, Michael Jackson, and Madonna. Geri also loves musical movies; her preference for movies was also influenced by her father. Geri’s dad was a great fan of Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and Shirley Bassey. At a very young age, Geri was already very fond of music and singing. Both of her parents were all out on their support for her. Geri started performing in her school during her teenage years. She joined her school’s drama club and choral group. Geri got her big break in the music Industry when she joined the group in the year 1993 along with Emma Bunton, Victoria Adams Beckham, Melanie Janine Brown, and Melanie Jayne Chisholm. They hit the music industry by storm when their first album ‘Wannabe’ hit number 1 in more than 20 countries around the world and sold more than 19 million copies. As soon as the success reached from coast to coast, Geri , along with other Spice Girls became media icons both in United Kingdom and US. Their images are found in almost every popular entertainment magazines. Issues on celebrity encounters and other scandals also became a day to day site on tabloids and TV shows. Nude photos of Halliwell taken when she was still young were not able to escape eyes of the public. Bravely, she faced the issue and admitted that it was really her; she said she was forced to pose nude several times when she was young to support herself.
After taking part on the group’s first two albums and playing on their first and last movie ‘Spice World,’ she decided to take her own path as a solo performer. The reason for her was not perfectly clear, though her decision was still respected by the group. It was not later when she had her first album Schizophonic hit the airways and produced 3 British number ones -- “Mi Chico Latino,” “Lift Me Up” and “Bag it Up.” The sale was not that impressive though in the US.
Right after the split up, Geri became a government appointed “Goodwill Ambassador” for the United Nations. Geri responded with the call effectively, spending most of her time supervising several socio-civic works and attending conferences in and outside of the country. She’s naughty when it comes to her attitude but a sincere and a devoted ambassador of her country. As part of her country’s support to US on war against Iraq, Geri offered a free concert on US army camps in Baghdad.
On a much brighter side, Geri Halliwell is a talented writer of pop tunes and fairy tale stories. She is a very talented singer and a total performer. She prefers to be natural in and out of the camera. She always tells people close to her that it’s always okay to be real. Being funny and naughty has always been part of her lively personality.
