Biography
Born Daisy Avance Fuentes, she was raised by her parents at Madrid and
at the age of 3 they were relocated in New Jersey. She can speak
Spanish and English fluently. She studied high school at Harrison in
Hudson County in New York. One of her memorable experience in her
school before she graduated was being a homecoming queen.
She later on pursued her studies at Bergen Community College getting a
degree in communications and journalism. Her perseverance and
dedication to her studies gave an opportunity to begin her television
career. In 1986, months before she turn 20, Univision’s New York
affiliate WXTV Channel 41 filled her in with the roster of talents
auditioning for the weather forecasting post. She got lucky and
started reporting for the evening edition of the news. In just a
matter of time, she incited an increase in TV audience because of her
beauty and speaking prowess.
After two years, Daisy got a position with Telemundo’s New York
Affiliate WNJU channel 47. It was her aura and fluency in speaking
both Spanish and English that made way to land her a job in MTV
Internacional, MTV’s syndicated video program in Spanish-language
version. Later on in was changed to MTV Latino and Daisy was the first
Latino VJ. It was aired for almost six years.
Daisy got her TV movie debut in 1992 when she appeared in the
long-running drama about love, betrayal and struggle for power
centering on the Alden family in a fictional town of Corinth, PA. As a
member of CNBC’s “Talk All Stars” in 1994 to 1995, she gained public
attention and even became popular as a talk show host in “Daisy”
sharing the limelight with famed TV interviewers like Dick Cavett,
Phil Donahue and Geraldo Rivera. Among her regular guests include
Patti La Belle, Jon Stewart, Cindy Crawford and Harry Connick, Jr.
It was followed by her appearance in TV’s Latino Laugh Festival in
1996. Also in this year, Daisy had finally made it to the big screen
with her film debut in the comedy-crime “Curdled” where she played the
role of Clara. She was supported by Angela Jones, William Baldwin,
Bruce Ramsay and more. A lot of television appearances followed
including “Cybill,” ”Dream On,” “Clueless in episode All Teed Off,”
and “The Larry Sanders Show.”
Other notable TV appearances as an actress include “The Weird Al Show
in episode Al Plays Hooky” (TV 1997), “Mad TV episode 3” (TV 1997), “I
Want my MTV” in 1996, “House of Style” (TV Series 97-98), America’s
Funniest Home Videos together with John Fugelsang (1997-2000), “I
Spike” (TV Series 2000), “Shutterspeed (TV 2000), “I love the 80’s”
(TV mini series in 2002), “Take 2: Living the Movies” (TV series
2002), “Colorvision” (TV series 2004) and “I Love the 90’s: Part Deux”
(TV mini series 2005).
She was credited both as an actress and as a hostess and in fact she
hosted a lot of events (small or big) like, Miss Universe Pageant in
2002 and 2003, Miss USA in 2003, and other occasional hosting.
Daisy didn’t only capture the heart of her fans through television and
film. She became the interest of photographer’s lenses and appeared as
a cover girl in magazines including Spanish-version Cosmopolitan,
Harper’s Bazaar and Vandadides. She also had covers for Latina, Eres,
Shape and Fitness where she revealed her secret about being physically
fit and maintain her 35C-24-36 ½ curves. Recently, she uses Winsor
Pilates to trim down and get rid of extra pounds to sculpt her body
slim.
Daisy became the global speaker and endorser of Revlon after signing a
multi-year contract. She shared the limelight with famed actresses
like Cindy Crawford, Halle Berry and Claudia Schiffer in promoting the
cosmetic line. Besides her Revlon advertisement, she appeared in
numerous commercials like M&M chocolate, Pantene, American Express and
Miller Lite. Yes, she smokes but not considered a heavy-smoker because
she smolders a cigar occasionally and when pressured with work.
Daisy is trailing a career on restaurateur and in fact, she is one of
the partners of Mediterranean restaurant located in Upper West Side of
Manhattan called “Dish.” She embodies the William Morris agency.
Daisy believes that if it weren’t because of her Spanish heritage, she
will not be doing what she is doing right now. She felt gratitude to
Spanish TV for giving her the chance before anyone else did. More
importantly, because of her Latino heritage she became a role model to
Latinos everywhere which is something she’s proud of. There are rumors
that she wanted to have her own talk show after her defunct “Daisy” in
1994-1995.
She believed that having a style is a natural gift and money will only
make you cheap. Daisy likes to change hairstyles, make up and fashion
every now and then because she find it fun and part of boosting the
essence of a woman. The most important thing according to her is no
matter what you look like for as long you maintain honesty inside.
Daisy loves to listen to the music of the Bee Gees, Eryka Baddu, Sade,
INXS and of course her favorite, Frank Sinatra. If there is one person
she likes to interview, it would be Luis Miguel and the last time she
interviewed him was six or seven years ago. She wanted to know him
better and she recalled the time when he sang old and romantic songs
of Sinatra.
